How accurate is The Judge
The Judge operates with a 3mm Mean Absolute Error (MAE).
What does that mean? MAE (Mean Absolute Error) is a standard measurement of accuracy. It represents the average distance between where The Judge says the ball landed and where it actually landed. A 3mm MAE means that, on average, our system's measurement is within 3 millimeters of the ball's true position — roughly the thickness of two stacked credit cards.
For context, a pickleball is 74mm in diameter and court lines are 50mm wide. At 3mm precision, The Judge can determine line calls with a margin of error that is 16x smaller than the width of the line itself — far beyond what any human referee can perceive.
How is The Judge differant from other line calling technologies on the market?
The short answer: We're the only pickleball system that actually measures where the ball is in 3D space.
The technical breakdown:
vs SwingVision, Wingfield, Owl AI, PlayReplay:
These systems use AI to classify whether a ball is in or out by analyzing 2D camera footage. They train neural networks to recognize the visual relationship between the ball and the line—but they don't calculate the ball's actual 3D position.
While this works for basic line calling, it relies on AI inference rather than geometric measurement. Camera angles, lighting changes, and ball blur can affect accuracy. Net-mounted cameras (like PlayReplay's) also can't maintain geometric calibration since net poles vibrate during play.
vs Sony Hawkeye (Tennis/Cricket Gold Standard):
Hawkeye uses 10+ rigidly-mounted, calibrated cameras to triangulate the ball's true 3D position with <3mm accuracy—the same principle as surveying or photogrammetry. This is geometric measurement, not AI guessing.
The Judge applies this same proven approach to pickleball with 5 calibrated 5MP cameras at 70 FPS, achieving the same sub-3mm precision at a price point designed for pickleball venues.
The difference:
-
AI systems: "The ball looks out from these camera angles"
-
The Judge/Hawkeye: "The ball's center is 2.1mm outside the line at coordinates X, Y, Z"
Why it matters: True 3D tracking means consistent accuracy regardless of lighting, viewing angle, or ball speed—precision you can trust for professional officiating.
